Common Sense Takes Over in Raleigh

Time to exhale, at least for a moment.

Thanks to voters who care and strategists who worked in lieu of sleeping, North Carolinia Republicans and independents will soon enjoy a 31-19 veto proof State Senate as well as a clear majority in the State House for the first time since the 1800s.  Just think about that for a while - over 100 years of Democrat-control come to at least a temporary end.  One hundred plus years of Democrat corruption, manipulation, deceit, and ignorance...and finally, common sense North Carolinians regardless of party affiliation can exhale.  And now, guess who gets to redraw the lines in 2011?

It will be interesting to see how Walter Dalton and Bev Perdue behave during the next two years in the NC Senate.  Or perhaps I should say hear about how they behave, since NC Democrats have quickly and repeatedly terminated any and all efforts to televise legislative sessions.  It will be equally interesting to see if Marc Basnight even finishes out his next and final term.  It must be utter depression for these folks since they know that their reign of dictatorial control has come to an end.

Enter, common sense.

Without question, the 2010 election worked out well for conservatives and independents alike - especially in North Carolina.  I can only imagine the relief that other Republicans and Independents who are much older than me feel after decades of pent up frustration and anger at our irresponsible State government.  As the biggest fan of North Carolina in the world (no, that is not an exaggeration), all I can say is "it's about time."  At last, we can redraw each and every gerrymandered lines so that North Carolina voting districts are constitutional.

But common sense North Carolinians' political problems aren't necessarily over.  There are still Democrats scattered throughout State government.  Take the lady at the top, Bev Perdue.  Instead of identifying statewide solutions in the worst economy since the Depression, ole Bev has been fundrasing here in Charlotte.  In fact, she just held her latest fundraiser of opulance was held at the Duke Mansion, which happens to be the location where my folks will be hosting my rehearsal dinner.  Don't get me wrong, Bev Perdue is an incredible fundraiser, I don't question her abiliites one bit.  The problem is that we are two years away from North Carolina's next gubernatorial election!  The problem is we are experiencing the worst economic times since the Great Depression!  It shouldn't surprise me, but the audacity to ignore the people's problems will never cease to simultaneously shock and irk me.

The good news:  Senator Phil Berger, Rep. Skip Stam, Rep. Thom Tillis, NCGOP Senate liaison Jim Blaine and NCGOP House liaison Scott Laster.  Common sense geniuses.  Get ready for lower taxes, lower spending, a marriage amendment, and other key legislation on important social issues.  If we could only take Washington like we took my home State in 2012.

For me, the 2010 Election felt like an incredible deep-tissue massage because, most importantly, it allowed me to exhale politically for the first time in a long time.
